Note From Sherri Horner
It is an absolute thrill each week knowing the guest that I am about to introduce has many accomplishments as a physician , fitness professional or athlete and will be bringing helpful information and inspiration to our radio listeners . The most exciting time for me as a talk show host is the one on one time spent with my guest before and after the live show. These conversations allow me to get to know the person within the professional . Helping my guest feel comfortable on the air is a priority. I sometimes welcome everyone to take part in the conversation by calling into the live show with questions and comments . Helping everyone to get on the road to healthier living is the main focus of the radio program . I have had the privilege and honor of interviewing well respected physicians , world renowned athletes and also world renowned fitness professionals . During our off air conversations after the show my guest often share things that may not have been mentioned during the show. There is always so much more to the story.
In this world everyone has a story . If you would like to share your success story send emails to Sherri@HealthFitnessBroadcast.com.

Maria Spano’ s fitness achievement story is worth repeating once again because it is inspirational to so many people . Maria’s story intrigues me and it is obvious that her story of focus and dedication should be heard by everyone . Maria Spano , Certified Public Accountant , wife and mother of two exercised a little here and there throughout her life but not seriously and not at all consistently . At age 45 Maria realized the kids were now older and it was time to focus a little more on herself . Over weight , out of shape and forty - five years of age Maria starts on her journey into the world of weight lifting . During our on air interview I asked her to take us back to the first day at the gym . Her response was, “ After the first workout I thought to myself , this is for me ! Why didn’t I do this sooner” ? At age 49 , her age at the time of our interview , Maria has competed in both Bodybuilding and Power lifting competitions . Not a likely combination because the training styles are so different most individuals train in one or the other . Placing 3rd in the 2005 NABBA - USA United States Open Bodybuilding - Women’s Open , this award is added to the line of trophies from earlier competitions. To satisfy your minds curiosity , check out her photo on the home page www.HealthFitnessBroadcast.com .
I had the opportunity to attend one of Maria’s power lifting meets in Atlantic City . It was so amazing to see this five foot , four inch tall one hundred and thirty pound lady in action . She was awarded World Natural Power lifting Federation 2005 Best Female Power lifter of the Year award that day. Additional record holdings and awards include :
* WNPF 2005 World Holder in Open Deadlift & Masters Power lifting
*WNPF 2005 American Record Holder in Open & Masters Powerlifting
* WNPF 2006 New Jersey State Record Holder in Bench Press , Deadlift and Powercurl.
*WNPF 2006 North American Elite Nationals 1st place , Open & Masters Deadlift .
Maria lifts RAW ( unequipped ) and competes in both Open and Masters Divisions .
Focus must be the key to success for Maria . This lady can bench press 150 lbs. , squat 200 , deadlift 375 and powercurl 82 lbs. What amazing achievements . Hearing her story should help us all remember that it is never too late to get started . Maria Spano found her love for fitness through Powerlifting and Body Building Training . I want to encourage everyone to try several fitness activities . When you find the right one you will know because it will be a pleasure not a chore . Then you can say exactly what Maria said to herself “ This is for me! Why didn’t I do this sooner “ ?

Obesity to Anorexia to a Healthy lifestyle!
After years of enduring the stresses of life while working at various jobs Jeanne Gumerson found herself weighing 248 pounds. Realizing it was time to take control of her life she began exercising at home. Joining the gym was the next step in her action plan. At this point Jeanne had increased her physical activity and was losing weight but her eating habits were not supplying adequate nutrition. Consuming mostly air-popped popcorn, Jeanne’s body weight was reduced to 99 pounds within a twelve month period. Moving from obesity to anorexia had taken its toll on her body. One day she was alarmed at the dizziness she was experiencing and sought medical treatment. Later she was admitted to an inpatient eating disorder treatment center. There she found herself as the only anorexic person surrounded entirely by patients being treated for obesity. Feeling totally frustrated and determined to get out of the treatment center Jeanne left three weeks later, but only after convincing everyone she was recovering. She started a support group for individuals dealing with unhealthy eating issues . The real wake up call for Jeanne came when a friend from the support group died of a heart attack. This was the point that Jeanne started to take her health and her life seriously. Jeanne got on the road to healthier living with a balanced nutrition and exercise plan. She not only practices a healthy lifestyle for herself but is able to help so many others. She is a certified personal trainer and also holds a certification in lifestyle and weight management. When I met Jeanne at a fitness convention in Orlando Florida it wasn’t too far into our conversation when I realized that she has a special health recovery story. At age 52 Jeanne Gumerson looks and feels healthy and fit, remembering that balance is the key to healthy living.

In my visits to various fitness centers I have the opportunity to meet some unique people with amazing stories . Jill Garret is one of those individuals with a great weight loss success story . Her story is one that I have enjoyed telling on many occasions . Jill created her own support system within herself as she became her own cheerleader and accomplished a healthy lifestyle change and weight loss of One Hundred and Ten pounds . Jill’s story is special to me because I was able to witness her transformation . Watching her move from an overweight and some what shy lady to one energetic confident woman . I met Jill on her very first day at the gym . From that day on she was a regular . Like a piece of exercise equipment that never wears out . That was Jill . Always there and always working hard . I once asked how much she was getting paid to spend so much time at the gym . Changing her lifestyle was a part time job that paid off with great health benefits . Jill’s membership to the fitness center was a gift from her mother . Her family supported her efforts at the gym , so Jill was determined to not let her mother down . Jill became more confident while making great strides and obviously dropping weight . A few months into her workout plan she received a gift from her Grandmother for training sessions with a Personal Trainer . There was no stopping Jill now . Her confidence soared . Not wanting to let herself , her grandmother and her Trainer down she continued with her dedication to this new lifestyle . Along with her commitment to her workouts , lowering her carbohydrate intake was her weapon of defense in the battle against the weight .
One day Jill asked if I had ever covered the topic of Gastric Bypass on the radio show. “ Not yet” was my response , “ But we plan to.” This is the special part about Jill’s story . She was schedule for Gastric Bypass Surgery a few months before she stared her exercise program . “ I chickened out” she tells me . Jill cancelled her surgery . Her other options were to stay on the same road she had been on or make a change on her own . I had the chance to talk with her on the air while she shared her story of reducing her weight by 110 pounds . Jill is an absolute inspiration to everyone . She did it on her own . No diet pills, no surgery , but a whole lot of sweat and determination . Although Jill’s weight loss success story did not include surgery , Gastric Bypass has helped many people with health issues due to obesity . Six months after my interview with Jill Garret , I had the opportunity to interviw a Bariatric Doctor on this topic. That was an enlightening interview . I look forward to covering this topic again on radio show . If you have a weight loss success story or have had Gastric Bypass Surgery and would like to share your story with our radio listeners send your email to Sherri@healthfitnessbroadcast.com .
Mike Brantleys health recovery story is an absolute inspiration to all .
“ God is good” is what Mike said to me as he began to tell his story of tragedy and triumph .
Weighing 162 lbs. and standing 6ft. 3 inches in height when he started on his road to a healthier living at age 32. Bulking up to two hundred and ninety pounds in eight years time this bodybuilder was able to bench press 525 lbs. He trained 5 days a week at the gym and was considering entering the world of bodybuilding competitions . At age 47 in August 2003 on his way to the gym for his 6:00 A.M. workout was when tragedy struck head on . Mike was on his motorcycle when a car passing another vehicle hit him head on forcing his right arm through the windshield and his right leg under the cars wheel . He was thrown to the ground where he pulled himself to the far edge of the road to avoid being run over by another vehicle. There he lay moving in and out of consciousness . After emerging from a coma eleven days later and having lost his right hand and right leg Mike spent another two months in the hospital . This dedicated fitness enthusiasm was only out of the gym for four months after his accident . Mikes workouts may have changed in form but not intensity . He rolled into the gym in his wheel chair to train his upper body until he received his prosthetic leg . The state of the art leg is only second to the best leg made he tells me . Mikes hook hand was delivered to him on New Year's Eve following his accident . He is able to bench press 465 lbs with his new hand . He also does his triceps dips with that hand . Mike uses his mechanical hand or robot hand as he calls it to do curls , triceps extensions and cable flyes . I had the opportunity to do those cable flyes with Mike during a workout . He amazes me . Mike Brantley doesn’t have a disability he has many abilities. The most obvious is his ability to keep a positive attitude and strong faith. Watching him train at the gym will seize any complaining from anyone about anything . Mike is admired by many . Not only those that knew him before his accident but by some of the world's best known professional Bodybuiders such as Lou Ferrigno . Mike is now a trainer and has a desire to produce an exercise video for amputees . Many thanks to Mike for sharing his health recovery story with Health Fitness Broadcast . It was my pleasure to interview him on the air and enjoy many conversations off the air . If you have a health recovery story or know someone that deserves to be featured on the radio show email Sherri@HealthFitnessBroadcast.com .
What do the names Sinatra, Bon Jovi, Springsteen and Horner have in common?
They are all incredibly talented individuals you can hear on the radio AND each one hails from the state of New Jersey.
Did you just ask 'But who's Horner'?
Well, if you live within earshot of Vineland, NJ, you're probably already familiar with my friend and colleague Sherri Horner, host of a popular heath & fitness themed radio show on 92.1FM.
Sherri interviews everyone from world champion athletes to top medical professionals and internationally known fitness experts.
(Not to boast, but I've been a guest on the show more than a few times. And if you look closely at the show's website, you might even notice a picture of yours truly. But that's enough about me... this one is all about you, baby!)
Thanks to Sherri's dedication to spreading the fitness word beyond the borders of the Garden State (along with some help from the miracle that is streaming media), fitness buffs worldwide can now tune in LIVE Saturdays 12:00 to 1:00 P.M. EST from the comfort of their personal computer.
What? That's smack dab in the middle of your Saturday workout? Or maybe you're still recovering from Friday night's decadence and debauchery?
No problem. Past shows are starting to become available at HealthFitnessBroadcast.com, too.
